Mirrors That Fit the Lectric XP4

Whether a mirror fits this bike turns on one question that almost no accessory guide asks: are the ends of the handlebar open. Bar-end mirrors, the type XP riders recommend more than any other, need somewhere to expand into, and a bar with sealed ends rules the whole style out. The owner manual does not answer it. We thought it did, once, and were wrong: the manual mentions quick plugs in the handlebar during assembly, and those turn out to be the electrical connectors in the wiring harness rather than bar-end plugs. The answer came from two other directions instead, and they agree. Lectric splits its own mirror installation guidance between models with closed grips and models with capped grips, and the XP4 sits in the capped group, which is also why the mirror Lectric sells is an end-cap mount rather than a clamp. Separately, three XP4 owner threads describe taking the caps out and fitting bar-end mirrors, one of them in under five minutes. So the style is available on this bike. What is still missing is any figure for the bar itself, and that absence is what the rest of this guide is organised around.

Two things have to be true for this to work, and both are evidenced rather than assumed. The XP4 has to have open bar ends, which Lectric implies by treating this model as capped rather than closed, and which XP4 owners confirm directly: the caps pull straight out, tightly enough that one owner suggests plastic pry tools, and another gets them out by loosening the grip clamp and sliding the grip along. Then the collet has to expand to the bore that is there. Hafny publishes a range for that, which is more than most sellers do, and an owner on the Lectric subreddit specifically recommends Hafny after calling the Lectric mirrors low quality. What nobody has published is the XP4 bore itself, and one owner in a separate XP4 thread reports a cheap bar-end mirror whose pin would not go in at all. Published range beats no range, but measure if you can.

An XP4 owner recommends this style in the off-brand mirror thread, saying it gives much better visibility than a bar-end mirror and does not need adjusting constantly, and a second Lectric owner moving away from the stock bar-end pair was told to check Hafny and reports no problems with the clamp-on. Set against that, two XP4 owners warn that above-bar mirrors on this bike can end up looking at your own shoulder, because the bars are narrow, and one who tried them went back to bar-end for that reason. Space is the other constraint: an XP4 owner asked whether a bar-mounted mirror still fits once the thumb throttle has moved to the left, and another XP4 owner answered that it does, with a phone mount on the same side. Hafny publishes the outside-diameter range the clamp covers; Lectric publishes no bar diameter for the XP4, so the published range is doing the work here rather than a match.

The verdict says with adapter for a literal reason: the installation involves pulling the XP4 handlebar cap out first, and CatEye supplies a spacer for the narrow end of the bore range so one mirror covers both. That matters on this bike more than on most, because the one XP4 owner who has reported a bar-end mirror failing describes exactly that problem: the pin on a cheap mirror would not enter the bar. A published range with a spacer in the box is the answer to that report, not a guarantee against it, since Lectric publishes no bore figure for the XP4 at all. We have found no XP4 owner running this particular mirror, so the fit claim is CatEye specification against owner-confirmed open bar ends, and nothing more.

The reasoning here is unusually simple, which is the point. Zefal publishes the diameter range its strap covers, and that range is wide enough that no plausible XP4 handlebar falls outside it, so this is the one mirror on the page whose fit does not depend on a measurement nobody has taken. Two honest limits. The mirror face is small, so it is a glance rather than a view, and a strap mount is a strap mount: it will not hold position as firmly as a bolted clamp. No XP4 owner report mentions this specific mirror, so the verdict rests on the published range alone.

Lectric states compatibility with all its eBike models and lists this pair on its XP4 compatible-accessories collection, so the fit claim comes from the manufacturer of both parts. Its own installation article confirms which kind of mount that is: the lineup is split into closed grips, meaning the XP 1.0, XP 2.0 and XP Lite, and capped grips, meaning every other model, and the mirror goes into the cap. Owners are less kind than the compatibility list is. In XP threads the recurring complaints are that these need readjusting constantly and that the field of view is small, with more than one rider replacing them. That is owner opinion rather than a fitment problem, and we record it here because a page that only reported the manufacturer claim would be leaving out the part buyers actually want to know.

What to check before you buy

With no published bar diameter, the specification the seller prints decides this.

  • Bar end or bar clamp. They read different numbers. A bar-end mirror expands inside the tube, so it needs an inside diameter range. A clamp-on wraps the outside, so it needs an outside diameter range. A listing that gives neither is telling you nothing about your bike.
  • Prefer a maker that publishes a range. Hafny states 14.8 to 23 mm inside for its bar-end mirrors and 21 to 26 mm outside for its clamp-ons, and CatEye publishes the same inside band with a spacer in the box. That is not a guarantee on a bike nobody has measured, but it is the difference between a reasoned choice and a coin toss.
  • Watch your own shoulder. Two XP4 owners report that mirrors sitting on top of the narrow bars mostly show them their own arm. Bar-end mirrors sit further out and past it.
  • Remember it folds. Owners who fold regularly say bar-end mirrors are fine as long as you rotate them over the bars first, and at least one deliberately chose a mirror that folds back against the grip for that reason.
  • Bar space is contested. Between the display, a bell, a phone mount and a relocated thumb throttle, a clamp-on has to find room. An XP4 owner confirms it can be done on the throttle side, alongside a phone mount.

Getting the end cap out

The caps are a press fit and they are tight. XP4 owners give two methods, and the second is much the safer one.

The direct approach is to pull the cap straight out. It works, but owners warn the cap will probably be damaged doing it, and suggest plastic pry tools rather than a screwdriver so you do not mark the bar. Since the cap is being replaced by a mirror, a wrecked cap may not matter to you, until the day you sell the bike or move the mirror.

The tidier route is to loosen the grip clamp bolt, slide the grip inboard a little, push the cap out from behind, then slide the grip back and retighten. The XP4 grips are clamp-on, so this is a real option rather than a wrestling match with glued rubber, and the manual gives the grip clamp a torque figure: 2-3 Nm on a 3 mm allen key. That is a small fastener, so tighten it to the number rather than by feel.

What we could not verify

The bar diameter, inside and out. This is the same gap the phone mount guide runs into, and on mirrors it costs more, because a bar-end mirror either goes in or it does not. One XP4 owner in the threads we read hit exactly that: the pin on a cheap bar-end mirror would not enter the bar, and he wondered aloud whether Lectric had made the bore smaller on this model. Nobody in the thread had a number to answer him with, and neither do we. Lectric does not publish one in the manual, the specifications or on the mirror product page. Everything here is therefore chosen on the range its maker publishes rather than on a match to a measured bar. If you own an XP4 and have put a caliper across the bar or down the bore, that measurement would settle three guides at once and we will publish it with your report as the source.

Will bar-end mirrors stop the XP4 folding?

No, provided you rotate them over the bars before you fold. Owners who fold daily, including for train commutes, report no problem, and one chose a mirror that folds back flat against the grip specifically to avoid the extra step.

Why would a bar-end mirror not fit?

Because the pin or collet has to expand inside the bar, and if the bore is narrower than the mirror expects it simply will not go in. One XP4 owner reports exactly that. Mirrors that publish an inside-diameter range, ideally with a spacer included, are the hedge against it.
