Where to Mount a Lock on the Lectric XP4

Buy the Lectric folding lock for an XP4 and there is a good chance you will spend an evening discovering it does not go where the bike appears to want it. The frame has mounting points behind the seat tube, ahead of the rear tyre. The lock case is physically too big to sit between them. Owner after owner arrives at the same conclusion independently, in separate threads, and more than one calls it a design oversight rather than a mistake they made. Lectric half concedes the point: the official install article says some frame areas may be tight or unsuitable and steers you to the main tube instead. Before any of the rest: do not bolt the case to the underside of the main tube. The lock is fine. Its case will not go where the bike suggests it goes. XP4 owners report the rear mounting point behind the seat is too tight for the lock to fit between the brackets, and call it a design oversight; one says there is now nothing that can be mounted to those points at all. An owner comparing directly against an XP 3.0 notes the XP4 made that space much tighter. Lectric partly concedes it: the official install article says some frame areas may be tight or unsuitable and suggests the main tube instead. What to check before you buy

This is a frame-shape decision more than a product decision.

  • Step-through or step-over. They need different brackets. A step-through mount relocates the case to the upper tube or bottle bosses; a step-over one sits behind the seat tube. Buying the wrong shape is the most common mistake here.
  • What you want the bottle bosses for. The bottle position is the reliable place for a lock, so if you also want a bottle there, go for an underseat cradle instead and keep the bosses free.
  • Whether you already own the Lectric lock. If you do, an adapter keeps it useful. If you do not, you are free to pick a lock that comes with a mount that suits the frame.
  • The bolts. They are aluminium. Owners strip them, and ball-end allen keys are the difference between a fifteen-minute job and a two-hour one.

What we could not verify

We have not measured the gap at the rear mounting point, and Lectric does not publish a dimension for it, so we cannot tell you which locks would fit there and which will not. What we can say is that multiple owners report the lock Lectric sells for the bike does not. We have also not found an owner report naming the underseat cradle specifically; the strategy of moving the lock off the frame is well attested, that particular part is not. If you have measured the gap, send the number and we will publish it with your report as the source.

Questions owners ask

Why will the Lectric lock not mount behind the seat?

Owners report the case is simply too large to fit between the mounting brackets there. Several describe it as an oversight, and one who compared against an XP 3.0 says the XP4 made that space considerably tighter.

Where do XP4 owners actually mount the lock?

The water bottle boss position, very often with the case upside down. If you go that route, use the rear two bolt holes: the front two put the case where the handlebar stem gets in the way.

Can I mount the lock case under the main frame tube?

We would not. It is a position some owners use, but one relays a report of a case coming loose while riding and throwing the rider over the handlebars. Given the alternatives, the risk is not worth it.

Do step-through and step-over need different brackets?

Yes, and this is the thing to get right. The two frames put the usable mounting points in different places, so the adapters are sold separately by frame shape. Check which XP4 you have before ordering.

Why are the frame bolts so hard to start?

They are aluminium and the clearance is tight. Owners recommend ball-end allen keys, and one used a length of rubber hose over the bolt to get it started. Take your time: stripping one is easy and unpleasant to fix.
