For the Retroid Pocket 5

Retroid Pocket 5 Screen Protectors

The screen protector is the first accessory most Retroid Pocket 5 owners buy, and for once the reason is simple: the panel is a 5.5 inch AMOLED, which is the most expensive part of the handheld and the part a scratch ruins most visibly. A retro handheld rides in bags and pockets next to keys and cards, so the screen takes abuse a phone in a case does not.

The fit question is a generation question, the same one that runs through this whole site. Retroid has shipped several Pocket models, and the Pocket 5 has a different screen and body from the Pocket 4 and the Pocket 3 Plus. A protector cut for one of those is cut for a different outline. Retroid publishes the panel; it publishes nothing about any third-party protector, so every fit here is the seller stating it against the Pocket 5, read off the listing on the date shown and quoted so you can judge it.

What to check before you buy

Two choices, both easy once you know them.

  • Buy the one that names the Pocket 5. Not the Pocket 4, not the Pocket 3 Plus. The panels and bodies differ across the generations.
  • Glass or film. Tempered glass is thicker and adds impact protection; TPU film is thinner, self-heals light marks and costs less, but does not shield against a hard knock the way glass does.
  • Take the multipack. First applications go wrong. A three-pack is the realistic count for a clean install plus a spare.
  • Look for an alignment frame. A glossy AMOLED shows a crooked film immediately, and a guiding frame makes a clean application much easier.

Why a Pocket 4 protector will not do

The retro-handheld aisle lists protectors for several Retroid generations in the same search, described in nearly identical words, and the size that matters is the panel and its surround. The Pocket 5 uses a 5.5 inch AMOLED in a body that differs from the Pocket 4 and the Pocket 3 Plus, so a film cut for those sits wrong: short of the edges, or fouling the bezel and the surrounding controls.

Retroid does not publish a cover-glass cut-out dimension, so nobody can settle the exact overlap from documents. What settles it in practice is the model name in the title. Buy the one that says Pocket 5, and treat a listing that only says "Retroid" or names an older Pocket as the wrong part until it proves otherwise.

What we could not verify

We have not applied any of these protectors. Retroid publishes the panel size; it publishes no glass cut-out dimension and nothing about any third-party film, so the exact coverage and the fit are the sellers, read off the listing on the date shown. If one sits short of the edges or fouls a control on your unit, tell us and we will publish your report as the source.

Questions owners ask

Will a Retroid Pocket 4 screen protector fit the Pocket 5?

Not reliably. The Pocket 5 has a different screen and body from the Pocket 4 and the Pocket 3 Plus, so a protector cut for those sits wrong. Buy the one whose title names the Pocket 5.

Tempered glass or film for the Pocket 5?

Glass is thicker and adds impact protection; TPU film is thinner, self-heals light marks and costs less but does not shield a hard knock the same way. Choose on whether you want impact protection or minimal thickness.

Why protect an AMOLED screen at all?

Because the AMOLED panel is the most expensive part of the handheld and a scratch shows on it worst. A retro handheld also travels in bags and pockets against keys, so the screen takes more abuse than a phone kept in a case.
